The LT1130A/LT1140A series of RS232 drivers/receivers features special bipolar construction techniques which protect the drivers and receivers beyond the fault conditions stipulated for RS232. Driver outputs and receiver inputs can be shorted to ±30V without damaging the device or the power supply generator. In addition, the RS232 I/O pins are resilient to multiple ±10kV ESD strikes. An advanced driver output stage operates up to 250kbaud while driving heavy capacitive loads. Supply current is typically 12mA, competitive with CMOS devices.Several members of the series include flexible operating mode controls. The DRIVER DISABLE pin disables the drivers and the charge pump, the ON/OFF pin shuts down all circuitry. While shut down, the drivers and receivers assume high impedance output states.

The MAX218 RS-232 transceiver is intended for battery-powered EIA/TIA-232E and V.28/V.24 communications interfaces that need two drivers and two receivers with minimum power consumption. It provides a wide +1.8V to +4.25V operating voltage range while maintaining true RS-232 and EIA/TIA-562 voltage levels. The MAX218 runs from two alkaline, NiCd, or NiMH cells without any form of voltage regulator.A shutdown mode reduces current consumption to 1µA, extending battery life in portable systems. While shut down, all receivers can remain active or can be disabled under logic control, permitting a system incorporating the CMOS MAX218 to monitor external devices while in low-power shutdown mode.A guaranteed 120kbps data rate provides compatibility with popular software for communicating with personal computers. Three-state drivers are provided on all receiver outputs so that multiple receivers, generally of different interface standards, can be wire-ORed at the UART. The MAX250 and MAX251 chip set form the heart of a complete, electronically isolated, RS-232 dual transmitter/receiver. By combining many functions on two chips, the cost and complexity required for an isolated digital interface is greatly reduced. Four low cost optocouplers, four capacitors, a diode and a small pot-core type transformer are all that are required to complete a 19.2k baud transceiver. Faster data rates are possible by using high speed optocouplers. In addition to the driving and receiving circuitry for the optocouplers, the chip set includes a push-pull transformer driver to supply power to the interface's isolated side.Other convenient features include single +5V operation, a low power shutdown mode, and output enable control for three-state operation.
