The AD536A is a complete monolithic integrated circuit that performs true rms-to-dc conversion. It offers performance comparable or superior to that of hybrid or modular units costing much more. The AD536A directly computes the true rms value of any complex input waveform containing ac and dc components. A crest factor compensation scheme allows measurements with 1% error at crest factors up to 7. The wide bandwidth of the device extends the measurement capability to 300 kHz with less than 3 dB errors for signal levels greater than 100 mV.An important feature of the AD536A, not previously available in rms converters, is an auxiliary dB output pin. The logarithm of the rms output signal is brought out to a separate pin to allow the dB conversion, with a useful dynamic range of 60 dB. Using an externally supplied reference current, the 0 dB level can be conveniently set to correspond to any input level from 0.1 V to 2 V rms.The AD536A is laser trimmed to minimize input and output offset voltage, to optimize positive and negative waveform symmetry (dc reversal error), and to provide full-scale accuracy at 7 V rms. As a result, no external trims are required to achieve the rated unit accuracy.The input and output pins are fully protected. The input circuitry can take overload voltages well beyond the supply levels. Loss of supply voltage with the input connected to external circuitry does not cause the device to fail. The output is short-circuit protected.The AD536A is available in two accuracy grades (J and K) for commercial temperature range (0°C to 70°C) applications, and one grade (S) rated for the −55°C to +125°C extended range. The AD536AK offers a maximum total error of ±2 mV ± 0.2% of reading, while the AD536AJ and AD536AS have maximum errors of ±5 mV ± 0.5% of reading. All three versions are available in a hermetically sealed 14-lead DIP or a 10-pin TO-100 metal header package. The AD5570 is a single 16-bit serial input, voltage output DAC that operates from supply voltages of ±11.4 V up to ±16.5 V. Integral linearity (INL) and differential nonlinearity (DNL) are accurate to 1 LSB. During power-up, when the supply voltages are changing, VOUT is clamped to 0 V via a low impedance path.The AD5570 DAC comes complete with a set of reference buffers. The reference buffers allow a single, positive reference to be used. The voltage on REFIN is gained up and inverted internally to give the positive and negative reference for the DAC core. Having the reference buffers on-chip eliminates the need for external components such as inverters, precision amplifiers, and resistors, thereby reducing the overall solution size and cost.The AD5570 uses a versatile 3-wire interface that is compatible with SPI®, QSPI™, MICROWIRE™, and DSP® interface standards. Data is presented to the part as a 16-bit serial word. Serial data is available on the SDO pin for daisy-chaining purposes. Data readback allows the user to read the contents of the DACregister via the SDO pin.Features on the AD5570 include LDAC which is used to update the output of the DAC. The AD640 is a complete monolithic logarithmic amplifier. A singleAD640 provides up to 50 dB of dynamic range for frequenciesfrom dc to 120 MHz. Two AD640s in cascade can provide up to95 dB of dynamic range at reduced bandwidth. The AD640 uses asuccessive detection scheme to provide an output current proportionalto the logarithm of the input voltage. It is laser calibrated toclose tolerances and maintains high accuracy over the full militarytemperature range using supply voltages from ±4.5 V to ±7.5 V.The AD640 comprises five cascaded dc-coupled amplifier/limiterstages, each having a small signal voltage gain of 10 dB and a –3 dBbandwidth of 350 MHz. Each stage has an associated full-wavedetector, whose output current depends on the absolute value of itsinput voltage. The five outputs are summed to provide the videooutput (when low-pass filtered) scaled at 1 mA per decade (50 µAper dB). On chip resistors can be used to convert this output currentto a voltage with several convenient slope options. A balancedsignal output at +50 dB (referred to input) is provided to operateAD640s in cascade.The logarithmic response is absolutely calibrated to within ±1 dBfor dc or square wave inputs from ±0.75 mV to ±200 mV, withan intercept (logarithmic offset) at 1 mV dc. An integral X10attenuator provides an alternative input range of ±7.5 mV to±2 V dc. Scaling is also guaranteed for sinusoidal inputs.The AD640B is specified for the industrial temperature range of–40°C to +85°C and the AD640T, available processed to MILSTD-883B,for the military range of –55°C to +125°C. Both areavailable in 20-lead side-brazed ceramic DIPs or leadless chipcarriers (LCC). The AD640J is specified for the commercialtemperature range of 0°C to +70°C, and is available in both20-lead plastic DIP (N) and PLCC (P) packages.This device is now available to Standard Military Drawing(DESC) number 5962-9095501MRA and 5962-9095501M2A.Product Highlights Absolute calibration of a wideband logarithmic amplifier is unique. The AD640 is a high accuracy measurement device, not simply a logarithmic building block. Advanced design results in unprecedented stability over the full military temperature range. The fully differential signal path greatly reduces the risk of instability due to inadequate power supply decoupling and shared ground connections, a serious problem with commonly used unbalanced designs. Differential interfaces also ensure that the appropriate ground connection can be chosen for each signal port. They further increase versatility and simplify applications. The signal input impedance is ~500 kΩ in shunt with ~2 pF. The dc-coupled signal path eliminates the need for numerous interstage coupling capacitors and simplifies logarithmic conversion of subsonic signals. The low input offset voltage of 50 µV (200 µV max) ensures good accuracy for low level dc inputs. Thermal recovery “tails,” which can obscure the response when a small signal immediately follows a high level input, have been minimized by special attention to design details. The noise spectral density of 2 nV/√Hz results in a noise floor of ~23 µV rms (–80 dBm) at a bandwidth of 100 MHz. The inherent monotonicity of the transfer function and wide range of clock frequencies allows the conversion time and resolution to be optimized for specific applications.The AD652 uses a variation of the popular charge-balancing technique to perform the conversion function. The AD652 uses an external clock to define the full-scale output frequency, rather than relying on the stability of an external capacitor. The result is a more stable, more linear transfer function, with significant application benefits in both single and multichannel systems.Gain drift is minimized using a precision low drift reference and low TC on-chip thin-film scaling resistors. Furthermore, the initial gain error is reduced to less than 0.5% by the use of laser-wafer-trimming.The analog and digital sections of the AD652 have been designed to allow operation from a single-ended power source, simplifying its use with isolated power supplies.The AD652 is available in five performance grades. The AD711 is a high speed, precision monolithic operational amplifier offering high performance at very modest prices. Its very low offset voltage and offset voltage drift are the results of advanced laser wafer trimming technology. These performance benefits allow the user to easily upgrade existing designs that use older precision BiFETs and, in many cases, bipolar op amps.The superior ac and dc performance of this op amp makes it suitable for active filter applications. With a slew rate of 16 V/µs and a settling time of 1 µs to ±0.01%, the AD711 is ideal as a buffer for 12-bit D/A and A/D Converters and as a high-speed integrator. The settling time is unmatched by any similar IC amplifier.The combination of excellent noise performance and low input current also make the AD711 useful for photo diode preamps. Common-mode rejection of 88 dB and open loop gain of 400 V/mV ensure 12-bit performance even in high-speed unity gain buffer circuits.The AD711 is pinned out in a standard op amp configuration and is available in seven performance grades. The AD711J and AD711K are rated over the commercial temperature range of 0°C to +70°C. The AD711A is rated over the industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. The AD711 is available in an 8-pin plastic mini-DIP, SOIC, small out-line, & cerdip.
